Hello from U.S.A.
Hello, My name is Joel. I'm from northern Michigan in the U.S.
I am new to the Motobecane and have found your site. A great site it is with very knowledgeable folks on here. I have been reading the archives for four days now.
I just bought a Motobecane. It is an import to the U.S. sold through a U.S. department store called Montgomery Wards in the 60's.
It has a nomenclature tag with Model # FZP14011 Engine # 4401131 Serial # 4342747.
From what a friend has told me & what I read on the internet it is a second generation 1964. Model AV88 Engine type AV7V2.
I cannot find much on the internet for this specific model. My friend was gracious enough to give me a type AU88 parts manual in French and a AV7V2 motor manual in English. This will get me started to learn my Moby. I understand the AV88 & AU88 are the same and were remodeled to avoid French laws on the number of dealerships they could have in one city.
I just wanted to introduce myself and get your input and opinions on my model of Motobecane and if any of you know this exact model.
I see that I can buy documentaion on this site. Will this Cd of documentation have my exact model and do you know of any manuals & parts manuals that are written in English.
Thank you for your time. With your help, I hope to restore this like the man from Ohio.

Re: Hello from U.S.A.
Hello Joel,
welcome here.
the serial number of your engine seems to be manufactured in 1964, but I don't know if the "export" macines have the same rules as the machine we have in France.
I'm afraid that in the CD-rom you won't find anything in english.
most of the documentation can be found freely on bibliotobec.org : http://www.bibliotobec.org/gallery/inde ... tegory/146
The AV88 is a wellknown machine in France aka "la bleue" (the blue), and your moped is not blue, its ather like the copper color. it's a "Chaudron" and the model is AV89.
a chaudron is a big pot made in copper (like this: http://environnement.ecole.free.fr/from ... c-476f.jpg" )
Regards from France,
Benoit.

Re: Hello from U.S.A.
Hello,
The club does not have any documentation in English for the AV 89, we have a Belgium one but nothing in English.
As far as the parts are concerned, your moped was imported by a private importer and seems to Have no special parts exept the rear ID plate.
Maby our friends from England have something for you.
I don't know if we have any documentation from Motobecane America that imported AV 40 and 50 in the late seventies, bur the machines were quite different.
Anyhow welcome on this site.

Re: Hello from U.S.A.
Thank you for the warm welcome and kind words.
I have been pulling my hair out trying to find what model I have.
Online I look at AV88 and all are different. I look at AV89 and all are different.
I now see why the difference. Montgomery Wards only sold two models. Standard & Duluxe. They only come in one color each. Creme for the Standard and Chaudron for the Deluxe.

nt
From what someone told me they also had different tank emblems compared to all Mototbecanes. Imports had the white M above the black M instead of the two heads with helmets. They are hard to find because there were not that many over here like over in France.
nt
I hope I can clear this model in my head for good so I know what to order parts for.
Benoit,
You say mine is not a Motobecane AV88 but it is a AV89. Can you please tell me why.
This is all I can find on the difference between the AV 88 & AV89. My tag on the motor says AV88 and I have a AR13 488S 9/63 printed on my carburator. I hope you can help. Thank you all. Joel.

DifferencesThough both the AV89 series and the 50 series use the AV7 engine, the AV89 series differs in several important ways.
Performance Differences
1. The carburetor is a 14mm Gurtner, running a pretty lean jet.
2. The intake port is larger. About twice the area of the stock port. Piston port kits also use this wide intake.
3. The case is ported to match the transfers of the cylinder.
4. The sidewall ports are a little taller and maybe a little wider.
5. The stock compression is 9:1.
6. The stock timing is 1.5mm BTDC.
7. The exhaust has about the same flow as the seventies version.
Other Differences
1. The engine head is different so it cannot be mounted on a 50 series frame and a 50 series engine cannot be mounted on an AV89.
2. The AV89 requires a longer belt (Ventico D243CR) because of the larger pulley. A NAPA 5L380 belt is a close match. 4L350 and 4L360 belts have also been reported as U.S. equivalents.
3. The AV89 has 18" wheels instead of 17" wheels.
Other Notes
Most AV89s have dates marked on the engine that can be misleading, usually a date from 1960. Though this is the date of manufacture for the engine, it is not the year of production for the moped. A more accurate estimate of the moped's year can be found on the original Gurtner carburetor.

Re: Hello from U.S.A.
Je ne saisi pas tout: riverside est une marque sous licence motobécane ou est ce une extension pour l'export, ou encore cela n'a t il rien à voir?

Re: Hello from U.S.A.

Re: Hello from U.S.A.
Les américains non plus n' imaginaient pas de rouler en Mob, c' est pour ça que quand Motobécane a initié Motobécane América à la fin de années 70, ils ont eu vite fait de se casser la gueule !!!
